John Fritz, MS, MBA, MHA
Mr. Fritz has over 30 years of professional experience focused in the areas of technology commercialization, technology transfer, licensing, research and development (R&D), marketing, business development, market research and product development. Mr. Fritz is currently the Associate Director of Technology Commercialization in the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC). Mr. Fritz was inspired to seek employment at OTC from his long standing interest in early stage technology development and entrepreneurship. His early experience working on his first master’s degree included work with the Small Business Development Center as a consultant to some early stage companies. The master’s (MHA at Texas State University) included a thesis topic focused on a process for clinician’s inventors creating and advancing new medical related inventions into the market. The OTC mission was a perfect fit to follow his passion for early stage technology and start-up ventures that leverage both his educational background and professional experience. Prior to arriving at OTC Mr. Fritz was a Project Analyst with Nerac a Research and Advisory Firm for companies developing innovative products and technologies. His Nerac duties involved a combination of research and consulting with a wide variety of companies worldwide, from start-up firms to the Fortune 500. Prior to Nerac Mr. Fritz was the Project Manager for Technology Commercialization at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Technology Center located at the downtown UTSA campus. At the Technology Center, Mr. Fritz works with start-up and early stage technology companies to help them develop and launch new technology and/or expand their existing market. He began his professional career in 1981 with Entergy Corporation, a multi-billion dollar utility conglomerate headquartered in New Orleans. At Entergy, Mr. Fritz worked in market research, product development and market management. He established the first ever new product development process at Entergy in the late 1980’s. While at Entergy, Mr. Fritz received the Peak Performer Award given to top annual performers and the Chairman’s Award for Innovation. He also won the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) innovators award. Mr. Fritz left Entergy in 1999 to pursue a new career opportunity at Kinetic Concepts Inc., a major medical device company headquartered in San Antonio. At KCI, Mr. Fritz worked in the areas of manufacturing, R&D, and business development. Mr. Fritz is a member of the Licensing Executive Society (LES). Mr. Fritz is past President of the New Orleans Chapter of the American Marketing Association.
Mr. Fritz has been a frequent lecturer nationally and internationally on the topic of new product development. Mr. Fritz received his B.S. in Management and M.B.A. in Marketing from the University of West Florida. He graduated with an M.S. in Management of Technology from UTSA and a Masters in Health Administration at Texas State University.
Sean Thompson, MBA, MS, CLP
Sean has focused his career on the development and commercialization of pharmaceutical, medical device, biologic, cell-based therapy, and engineered tissue-related products and services. Sean’s career has included positions in sales, market research, new products marketing, assessment/evaluation of new product opportunities, ideation/early new product development, leading new product commercialization teams to product launch, alliance management, intellectual property development, executive management and licensing/business development in the bio-medical and healthcare products industry. Over the years, he has worked for Bristol-Myers Squibb, LifeCell, sanofi-aventis, Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (KCI – now Acelity), South Texas Technology Management (the technology transfer office of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio), BioBridge Global and GenCure, and has performed consulting projects for Frost & Sullivan, Azaya Therapeutics, EO2 Concepts, Inc. and others. Sean is currently Senior Technology Licensing Specialist and Co-Director of TechNovum, the technology and startup company accelerator, at the Office of Technology Commercialization at UT Health San Antonio. He is passionate about the process of new product innovation, especially as it relates to the ideation, development and commercialization of regenerative medicine and anti-cancer therapeutics.
Sean holds a BBA in Marketing from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, an MBA in Finance from the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University, a Master of Science in Biotechnology from The John Hopkins University, and is a Certified Licensing Professional, the professional designation of Licensing and Business Development professionals.
